How Our Total Loss Reports Work
STEP 1
Allison got into a car accident
She called her insurance company and told them about the accident. The vehicle was towed to a collision repair centre and she waited for her insurance adjuster to let her know what happens next.
STEP 2
Insurance adjuster deemed the vehicle a total loss
The claims adjuster inspected the vehicle and let her know that the vehicle is a "total loss". A total loss refers to a situation wherein the repairs to a vehicle would cost more than the actual cash value of the vehicle at the time of the loss.
STEP 3
Insurance company supplied a settlement offer
Insurance companies want to reduce the cost of their payout, so they prefer to use valuation reports from their partner companies. Allison is not required to accept the settlement offer based on these reports.
STEP 4
Allison decided to get her own Total Loss Report
She did not trust the vehicle value presented by the insurance adjuster. She got her own third party report calculated with Canadian Black Book and the value of multiple comparable vehicles. Her valuation came back higher and she let her insurance company know that she wanted to negotiate the settlement or she would submit an appeal under the Insurance Act. Allison can use the Total Loss Report to negotiate a higher insurance settlement
Alison is able to present her Total Loss Report's vehicle value and additional research to her claims adjuster and negotiate a higher settlement value.
